Bridge Scoring
Clubs + Diamonds are collectively known as The Minors
Hearts + Spades are collectively known as The Majors
Firstly, for each trick won add points
Club or Diamond +20pts
Heart or Spade +30pts
No Trump +40pts for first trick, +30pts for any additional trick
Secondly, add bonus points
1C 1D 1H 1S 1NT Partscore Bonus (+50 pts)
2C 2D 2H 2S 2NT
3C 3D 3H 3S 3NT Game Bonus (+300pts or +500pts)
4C 4D 4H 4S 4NT
5C 5D 5H 5S 5NT
6C 6D 6H 6S 6NT Small Slam Bonus (+500pts or +750pts)
7C 7D 7H 7S 7NT Grand Slam Bonus (+1000pts or +1500pts)
Declarer must score 6 tricks + contract bid for the "contract to make"
e.g. in 3NT you must make 6+3 = 9 tricks
Example Scores:
2D + 1 20 + 20 + 20 +50 = 110
1NT + 1 40 + 30 +50 = 120
2S + 2 40 + 40 + 40 + 40 +50 = 210 N.B. In the last two examples there are the same number of tricks in spades won (10 in total) but there are large score differences depending on contract bid.
4S = 40 + 40 + 40 + 40 +300 = 420
Each trick above your contract is called an overtrick
Each trick short of the contract is called an undertrick
If you fail to make enough tricks for your contract…
For each undertrick +50 or +100 to opponents
Bidding Guidelines:
1. Don’t bid too high otherwise you won't make your contract and opponents score points
2. Don't bid too low otherwise you'll only get a partscore bonus instead of a game or slam bonus
